The windflower (Pulsatilla patens) is the Provincial flower of Manitoba. This anemony is also known as Pasque flower (it blooms around easter) and prairie smoke (how lovely!). A myth contends that it sprang from the tears Venus shed over Adonis' death. "Where streams his blood, there, blushing, springs a rose./ And where a tear has dropped, a windflower grows'' (Bion of Smyrna, quoted by Nicholas Culpeper in The Complete Herbal (1653).
