Initially, compass roses did not indicate four directions, but eight winds. Thus, it was common for windroses to indicate the East with the letter L for levante - the easterly wind in Italian - and the North with the letter T for ''tramontana'' - the northern wind crossing the mountains. In the Middle-Ages, compass roses sometimes had the East on top, to indicate that Jerusalem was above everything...
